National Institute of Technology was formerly known as Government Engineering College, Raipur.
Founded in 1956 as College of Mining & Metallurgy with two engineering disciplines, Mining and Metallurgy, the institute is one of the oldest of its kind in India.
Now the college is one of the twenty National Institute of Technologies in the country.
The institute is accorded the Institute of National Importance status by the NIT Act of Indian Government.
The institute offers 2 undergraduate (B.Tech. and B.Arch.) and 2 post graduate programmes M.Tech. and M.C.A. in 11 engineering disciplines and architecture.
