Burhanpur is situated on the bank of river Tapti. The district is divided into two development blocks, Burhanpur and Khaknar, and three tehsils, Nepanagar, Burhanpur, and Khaknar.
The city is surrounded by rampart and has several huge gates. It was once the capital during the Mughals (Akbar) rule in India.
